State trial judges run for election every six years, and in Placer County the terms are staggered so only a few judges run in each election. If a judge does not file for reelection the seat becomes vacant and the Governor can fill the seat with a new judge, who must run at the next election. If no challenger files against a sitting judge up for reelection, the sitting judge is automatically reelected and does not appear on the ballot.
